5197 Related Optional Design Methods

For contract plans containing prestressed concrete beam designs utilizing the old .60 release factor (i.e., designed before 10/1/2010, and do not have the .65 factor usage note on the beam design sheets), fabricators "may" (mandatory usage if design release strengths are greater than 5500 psi) employ one of two available methods for reducing release strengths. Both utilize versions of the current optional design submittal process. Note: confirm the actual design release factor used by contacting the designer before allowing either of the following reduction methods:

  • Method 1 - "Modified" Optional Design - a straight line 7.7% reduction of the release strength, accompanied by a 500 psi increase of the 28 day strength - just as TxDOT allowed in the original 2009 version of the research implementation.
  • Method 2 - a "Conventional" Optional Design - where the fabricator uses the new .65 factor in a re-design of the beam using Prstrs14 or PGSuper.

See 5197 Implementation for additional information on these optional design methods.

Checklist

1. Validate submittal email

Verify:

  1. Submittal is sent directly from Fabricator or Detailer
  2. District's dedicated shop plan review address is in "CC" field (when the District is not the reviewer and therefore in the primary recipient field)
  3. Contractor's email address is in "CC" field
  4. Includes other TxDOT "CC" addresses as directed by the District (Ex: AE)
  5. Subject line includes correct CSJ and County
  6. Optional (alternate) design calculations and associated shop plan sheets are sealed, signed, and dated by an engineer registered in the state of Texas (including 5197 related revisions)
  7. Attachment is .pdf or .dat format with correct file name (see Guide for additional details)

2. Send confirmation email within two business days

3. Login submittal per office preferences

4. Create project folder on backed up drive

5. Save email and attachments to project folder

6. Open .pdf and save with "R" suffix (Review copy)

7. Review and annotate .pdf ("Red" = permanent)

  1. Check the Method 1 or Method 2 optional design information for conformance to 5197 implementation specs
  2. Method 1 may only be used on designs using a .60 release factor - verify by looking for the factor usage note on the beam design sheets; if this note is not present on post 10/2010 letting beam design sheets - contact the designer to verify the factor used in design before allowing a Method 1 reduction
  3. Method 1 or Method 2 release strength reductions must be used by the fabricator on beam designs prior to 10/2010 where a .60 release factor was used and the required design release strength exceeds 5500 psi
  4. Exercise extreme caution in preventing the doubling up of the use of the .65 release strength reduction factor in both design and shop plan associated optional designs (doubling the reduction could cause excessive beam cracking and reduced service life)

8. Stamp all sheets (approved or approved except as noted, as appropriate)

9. "Save" to preserve Review "R" copy (make sure Rev "N" is also at the end of the name, where "N" = revision number)

10. "Save as" with "AP", "AX" or "RC" suffix to denote review status (again, after Rev "N")

11. "Flatten" file to remove temporary annotations (other than "Red") and embed permanent markups

12. Add Security using office password and allowing printing

13. "Save" final version to apply Flattening and Security

14. Stamp, secure, and save final Optional Design (OD) file

15. Reply, attach, and distribute final review .pdf

  1. Reply to original email to insure inclusion of "CC" recipients (the Fabricator or Detailing entity should be the primary recipient)
  2. Add status suffix to subject line: "AP", "AX" or "RC" (after the Rev "N" script)
  3. Verify District's dedicated address appears in "CC" field (when applicable)
  4. Include Construction Division's dedicated addresses in "CC" field
  5. "CC" Jeff Cotham at BRG-5197Issues@dot.state.tx.us on all 5197 related "modified" optional designs for the purpose of documenting the .65 release factor usage
  6. Include Construction Division's printing requirements in body

16. Save reply email to project folder

17. Update office shop plan log

18. Verify email delivered to recipients
