5197 Related Optional Design Methods

For contract plans containing prestressed concrete beam designs utilizing the old .60 release factor (i.e., designed before 10/1/2010, and do not have the .65 factor usage note on the beam design sheets), fabricators "may" (mandatory usage if design release strengths are greater than 5500 psi) employ one of two available methods for reducing release strengths. Both utilize versions of the current optional design submittal process. Note: if the .65 factor usage note is not present on the beam design sheet(s) in post September 2010 let contract plan sets, confirm the actual design release factor used by contacting the designer before using either of the following reduction methods.

  • Method 1 - "Modified" Optional Design - a straight line 7.7% reduction of the release strength, accompanied by a 500 psi increase of the 28 day strength - just as TxDOT allowed in the original 2009 version of the research implementation.
  • Method 2 - a "Conventional" Optional Design - where the fabricator uses the new .65 factor in a re-design of the beam using Prstrs14 or PGSuper.

Checklist

1. Distill CAD drawings into PDF booklet

  1. Set resolution to insure legibility at full scale viewing
  2. Smallest font size = 1/16" at full scale
  3. Name file: CSJ, County, Item, Fab., Det., Submittal No. (example: 1802-03-163 Tarrant IV Fab Det 1.pdf)
  4. Set no security permissions/passwords
  5. Set print size format to 11" x 17"
  6. 7.3mb max attachment(s) file size per email
  7. Do not "zip" files

2. Prepare all optional design data for prestressed beams

  1. Insure that Method 1 or Method 2 optional design information conforms to 5197
    implementation specs
  2. Method 1 may only be used on designs using a .60 release factor - verify by looking for the
    factor usage note on the beam design sheets; if this note is not present on post 10/2010
    letting beam design sheets - contact the designer to verify the factor used in design before
    using a Method 1 reduction
  3. Method 1 or Method 2 release strength reductions must be used by the fabricator on beam
    designs prior to 10/2010 where a .60 release factor was used and the required design release
    strength exceeds 5500 psi
  4. Exercise extreme caution in preventing the doubling up of the use of the .65 release strength
    reduction factor in both design and shop plan associated optional designs
  5. Fill out and convert input forms and output data to .pdf set
  6. Place engineer's seal (signed and dated) on first sheet
  7. Seal, sign and date each affected shop plan details sheet
  8. Optionally supply .dat input file to speed review

3. Format email

  1. Obtain and insert reviewer's email address in primary recipient field (one address only);
    contact Contractor, project Area Engineer, or District Bridge Engineer for guidance. (Find district local information.)
  2. Place District's dedicated shop plan review address in "CC" field.
  3. Place Contractor's email address in the "CC" field
  4. Insert additional TxDOT "CC" addresses as directed by the District
  5. Subject line should match file attachment name
  6. Format email "body" per the Guide with all project info
  7. Include any references to change orders, special comments

4. Transmit email with attachments

5. Contact reviewing office if an email confirming the reception of the submittal is not received
within two business days

6. If reviewer reply email contains "RC" (Returned for Correction) status notation in subject line,
correct and resubmit for review

7. If reviewer reply contains "AP" (Approved) or "AX" (Approved Except as Noted) in the subject
line, make any required corrections and:

  1. On 11 x 17 sheets print and supply an approval stamped paper set to the TxDOT Inspector at
    your plant
