Full freeway closure on US 290 scheduled for this weekend
HOUSTON — Construction continues at a rapid pace on the SH 99 Grand Parkway interchange at US 290 and the W. Little York Bridge over US 290 allowing crews to begin hanging bridge beams, marking significant progress for both projects. In order to safely set the beams over mainlanes using heavy equipment, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will have two major freeway closures on US 290 for the weekend of Sept. 27-30.
The work at the SH 99/US 290 interchange is part of the $320 million SH 99 Grand Parkway Segment E project from IH 10 W to US 290. The contractor will work this weekend on hanging beams for the new direct connectors from US 290 east- and westbound to SH 99 Grand Parkway southbound.
Completion of construction on this project is estimated at the end of 2013.
Starting Friday, Sept. 27 at 9 p.m., through Monday, Sept. 30 at 5 a.m., the US 290 east- and westbound mainlanes will be closed at Bauer. Motorists will be detoured to the frontage road at the Bauer exit, continue through the signalized intersection and re-enter the freeway. Note this closure will also occur the weekend of Oct. 4-7.
Construction crews on the $110 million Project G of the US 290 Program to reconstruct US 290 from W. Little York to FM 529 are working toward a project milestone on the W. Little York Bridge over US 290. The bridge is being rebuilt in two segments while minimizing traffic impacts, with the first segment estimated to be complete by mid-November.
On Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., the US 290 eastbound mainlanes will be closed at W. Little York. Motorists will be detoured to the frontage road at the W. Little York exit, continue through the signalized intersection and re-enter the freeway. In addition, the Sam Houston Tollway north- and southbound connector ramp to US 290 eastbound will be closed.
Northbound motorists can exit the tollway at W. Little York, turn right at W. Little York and continue to US 290. Southbound motorists can detour to US 290 westbound, exit at Jones Road and U-turn to the eastbound frontage road. On the night of Sept. 27 from 10 pm. to 8 a.m., the US 290 westbound mainlanes will be reduced to one lane from Gessner to Beltway 8.
Local law enforcement will provide traffic control at the signalized intersections to keep traffic flowing.
