Travelers everywhere are familiar with Texas’ big commercial airports, such as Dallas/Fort Worth International or Houston’s Bush Intercontinental. Less familiar, however, are the many smaller airports and heliports that also serve the state of Texas. TxDOT’s Aviation Division helps the state’s general aviation airports secure funding and adhere to regulations.

General aviation and “reliever” airports typically support limited scheduled air service and board between 2,500 and 10,000 passengers every year. Besides providing air access to smaller, more remote communities, these vital facilities support aeromedical flights, aerial firefighting, law enforcement and disaster relief. With approximately 300 of these airports open to the public, Texas' general aviation airport system is one of the largest in the nation.

Note: Please call the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at (866) 835-5322 for questions relating to federal aviation responsibilities including low-flying aircraft, pilot behavior, fuel quality and commercial airlines.
