TxDOT's fleet consisted of 16,000 vehicles and other equipment in 2013. Analysis across multiple variables, including fuel usage and supply-demand, indicated an opportunity to maintain existing operational capabilities while reducing the size of the fleet.
TxDOT launched an initiative to reduce its fleet size by identifying and retiring underutilized and aging assets statewide in an effort to maximize utilization. About 3,000 assets were removed from the fleet, bringing TxDOT's current fleet size to about 13,000. The reductions are resulting in decreased operating costs. Additionally, improved procurement and maintenance strategies will result in substantial cost savings.
TxDOT's fleet sizing effort is expected to lower the total cost of ownership by about $345 million over the next 10 years.
