FM 2493 - Old Jacksonville Highway

Project Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) are working together to develop preliminary plans for improvements to FM 2493. Several planning projects are currently underway along the corridor, which stretches from Loop 323 in Tyler to US 69 south of Bullard. Although the projects are being developed independently and are in various stages of completion, rigorous efforts are being employed to coordinate the projects and ensure a consistent approach.

Old Jacksonville Highway Corridor Study

The Tyler Area MPO is completing a corridor study of Old Jacksonville Highway (FM 2493) beginning at Loop 323 and extending south approximately 13.8 miles to the intersection of US 69. The work items include evaluating the placement of driveways, the availability of turn lanes (current and future access management), the posted speed limits and the potential for multi-modal improvements.

FM 2813 to FM 346 Segment

TxDOT is developing construction plans for improvements to FM 2493 from FM 2813 in Gresham to FM 346 in Flint. These improvements will help ease congestion and improve safety through this area. Enhancements to the heavily traveled corridor include:

  • Widening from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided highway with curb and gutter.
  • Adding a continuous center left-turn lane to provide additional safety for drivers.
  • Incorporating sidewalks and bicycle lanes for pedestrians and cyclists respectively.
  • Improving visibility at Spruce Hill Road (County Road 140).

The project requires the acquisition of additional right of way.

FM 346 to US 69 Segment

TxDOT is developing preliminary plans for improvements to FM 2493 from FM 346 in Flint to Us 69 south of Bullard. These improvements will help ease congestion and improve safety through this area. Enhancements include:

  • Widening from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided highway with curb and gutter.
  • Adding a continuous center left-turn lane to provide additional safety for drivers.
  • Incorporating sidewalks and bicycle lanes for pedestrians and cyclists respectively.

The project would require the acquisition of additional right of way.

The Tyler Area MPO is coordinating all public outreach activities associated with the corridor study. Please contact their staff or visit their website for more details.

FM 2813 to FM 346 Segment

A public meeting was held on December 10, 2013 to present the technically preferred alternative. TxDOT presented Alternative No. 1 as the technically preferred alignment. After reviewing public comments from the meeting, bike lanes were added to the schematic layout. TxDOT held a public hearing on April 16, 2015 that covered the social, economic and environmental effects of the project. The final schematic can be viewed below under the “Downloads” section. No additional public outreach activities are scheduled at this time.

FM 346 to US 69 Segment

TxDOT plans to host its first public meeting related to this segment of FM 2493 in early 2016. Three widening alternatives will be presented for public comments. Any property owners or interested citizens are encouraged to participate. The exact date of the meeting is still pending; however, this page will be updated as soon as the date and time is selected. Please check back for meeting details.

Schedule

Old Jacksonville Highway Corridor Study

The Corridor Study is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2015. Please contact the Tyler Area MPO for more details.

FM 2813 to FM 346 Segment

TxDOT received environmental clearance from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on July 31, 2015. Currently, we are preparing the right-of-way maps and construction plans to move the project forward.

  • Right-of-way acquisitions are expected to begin in 2016
  • Right-of-way acquisitions and construction plans should be completed in 2018
  • Current financial forecasts show construction funds available in 2020

FM 346 to US 69 Segment

TxDOT and its consultants are developing three widening alternatives for the project for presentation at the first public meeting being planned for early 2016. The objective is to obtain public feedback to work toward identifying a recommended alignment. The recommended alignment will be presented for public comment at the public meeting and would be evaluated (along with a No Build Alternative) in an environmental assessment.

The environmental assessment will examine potential project-related impacts as well as measures to avoid, minimize or mitigate those impacts. The environmental assessment will be subject to an extensive review process and coordination with resource agencies such as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Texas Historical Commission and others. A decision on the environmental assessment (possible environmental clearance) is anticipated in winter 2017.
