| Purpose | TxDOT is proposing to widen SH 21 from a two-lane undivided roadway with alternating passing lanes to a four-lane divided highway with a grassy median. The SH 21 project limits are from County Road to Old Highway 20, approximately 7 miles in length. Bastrop County’s rapid growth (20% from 2010 to 2020) has increased traffic volumes. This project is needed to accommodate existing and projected traffic volumes to improve safety and mobility. |
| Description | The proposed SH 21: County Road to Old Highway 20 project would eliminate undivided portions of the roadway by adding a grassy median. Additional right-of-way is needed to accommodate the wide grassy median for a total of 230 feet. The project would include 12-foot-wide travel lanes, with 4-foot-wide inside shoulders and 10-foot-wide outside shoulders. A new bridge would also be constructed over US 290. This plan will guide a future improvement project to accommodate growth and increased traffic demand. The project would limit the number of intersections on SH 21 by using Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersections. A Restricted Crossing U-Turn is an innovative intersection design to improve safety. Turning movements for drivers entering or crossing SH 21 are modified to reduce conflict points. The RCUT intersection reduces the number and type of conflict points, reducing crash potential. RCUT intersections are proposed at Cardinal Drive, Pine Valley Drive, Pine Valley Court, Squirrel Run, N. Old Potato Road, S. Old Potato Road, RV Park Driveway, Dixon Private Road, Gatco Treatment Systems, and various driveways along the corridor. |
