US 77 in Kingsville serves as a route for local traffic in the area and also serves motorists traveling in South Texas along US 77. For the past few years, TxDOT has been using the recommendations of the I-69 Citizen Committees to continue developing I-69 in Texas. The future I-69 Texas route includes US 77 in South Texas.
Project Need and Purpose
Currently, US 77 does not meet interstate standards. As traffic increases on US 77, the need for an interstate-quality road becomes more important. An interstate-quality road would include frontage roads and would also control access to the high-speed main travel lanes using entrance and exit ramps. An interstate-quality road would better accommodate growing traffic volumes and also enhance safety along US 77.
The purpose of the improvements to US 77 between Kingsville and Driscoll is to meet interstate highway standards with the intent of improving safety and mobility, expanding capacity and encouraging economic growth.
Project Development and Construction
This project, from Kingsville to Driscoll, is approximately eight miles in length and spans from E. Corral Avenue / Farm-to-Market Road 1898 in the northern portion of Kingsville in Kleburg County north to County Road 12/FM 3354, just south of the City of Driscoll in Nueces County. The project will consist of:
- Reconstruction of and improvements to the existing road
- Two main lanes in each direction
- Discontinuous frontage roads
- Construction and overlay of main lanes and frontage roads
- Construction and widening of bridges, which will eliminate crossroad traffic on main lanes of travel
- Construction of at-grade ramps and intersection improvements
The improvements will also include wider road shoulders and increase safety for disabled vehicles and motorists needing to pull over to the shoulders.
Construction for the project is anticipated to run April 2014 - August 2016 with a projected opening date of October 2016.
The estimated total project cost is approximately $79 million.
