ATLANTA – A section of FM 1997 (North Grove Street) in Marshall will be spruced up this year with a new riding surface, new sidewalks, and removal of old traffic islands according to plans approved in June by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

“We will be resurfacing a 1.7-mile section of the highway between Loop 390 and US 80,” said Paul Wong, area engineer for TxDOT in Marshall. “In addition to the new pavement, we will also be removing the traffic islands between Hickory Street and Harvey Drive and adding sidewalks near East Texas Baptist University (ETBU).

“The old timber retaining wall along the current narrow walking path in front of the Administrative building at ETBU has begun to deteriorate. Plans are to widen the walkway to 8 feet using a solid concrete sidewalk and retaining wall with a decorative brick veneer. A drainage system will also be constructed along the top of the retaining wall to prevent rainwater from flowing over the wall and onto the sidewalk. The sidewalk will tie in with the wheelchair ramps installed previously at the intersections of Rainey and Wright Streets. We will also be replacing the concrete curb and gutter along the sidewalk section,” said Wong.

All the sidewalk construction and removal of the traffic islands will be completed before the roadway is resurfaced.

Madden Contracting Company of Minden, Louisiana, was awarded the contract for the construction project with a bid of $829,237.

Work on the project should begin in September and take about six months to complete, Wong said.
