MIDLAND COUNTY – The outside lanes will be closed on FM 1788 near the north airport entrance (Loop 40) starting Monday morning as a project continues to improve a 4-mile section of FM 1788 between Highway 191 and Business Interstate 20. FM 1788 is also known as Highway 349 in this area.
The outside lanes will be closed for the next several months for culvert work and road widening work.
The overall project will accomplish two things. First, it will add a continuous left turn lane to the section north of Loop 40, which will improve safety for turning movements. Second, it will rehabilitate and rebuild the entire stretch of road. The road has deteriorated in recent years thanks to heavy oilfield traffic.
Access to businesses will be maintained as much as possible. Motorists are asked to please obey any warning signs, pilot cars or flaggers they encounter in the work zone.
A reduced speed limit will be in effect. Much of the project will have a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Some areas will have a speed limit of 50 miles per hour. The difference is caused by the different speed limits that already exist in the area.
A width restriction of 11 feet will be put in place for the project.
The project is expected to to be completed in early 2018.
Jones Brothers Dirt & Paving Contractors of Odessa won the project with a bid of $6.9 million.
