Objectives

The main objectives of the Lufkin US 59 North/Loop 287 project are to:

• Construct mainlanes that will allow traffic to flow freely north and south on US 59 and US 69 and east and west on Loop 287.
• Build frontage roads on Loop 287.
• Replace bridges at three railroad crossings and improve clearance at the Loop 287/US 59 and Business 59 bridge.
• Construct U-turns at Business 59 and Moffett Road.

Background

TxDOT and Brown and Gay Engineers (BGE) presented five alternatives for this project at a public meeting held in September 2006. As a result of public comments and other design-related issues, Alternative 5 was selected for continued study.

After a value engineering study was conducted, several changes were incorporated into the design.
