Bicycle Safety Campaign

Bicyclist fatalities resulting from traffic crashes increased 58% from 2019 through 2023. In 2023 alone, there were 2,604 traffic crashes involving bicyclists in Texas, resulting in 106 deaths and 384 serious injuries. The top contributing factors in these crashes were driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, and speeding.

Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers and can also be fined for violating traffic laws. TxDOT offers these safety tips to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

When riding a bike:

  • Follow traffic laws. Stop at red lights and stop signs.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic and use the bike lanes, or ride as near as possible to the curb.
  • Use hand signals for turns or stops.
  • Equip your bike with lights at night - a white light on the front and a red light or reflector on the back.
  • Be visible and safe by wearing light/reflective clothing.
  • Always wear a helmet.

When behind the wheel:

  • Pass bikes at a safe distance and give cyclists room to ride.
  • When turning, yield the right of way to cyclists.
  • Always follow the speed limit and pay 100% attention to the road.
